Reflecting on the 'Ocean' Documentary
The fishing industry is at a crossroads.
Recent media, including the new Ocean documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough, have sparked passionate debate about the challenges facing fisheries today. But there’s more to the story than meets the eye.
In this episode of the Seafood Matters Podcast, Tom Rossiter, co-founder of CatchCam Technologies, joins host Jim Cowie to reflect on the realities behind the headlines.
“If I had five minutes face-to-face with Sir David, I’d probably want to show him the underwater footage that we’ve collected over time,” shares Tom Rossiter. “Fishermen are making real efforts, and that’s been left out."

Supporting Sustainable Fishing Through Collaboration
This conversation isn’t about finger-pointing.
It’s about bringing balance to the narrative and recognising the positive changes happening within fishing communities, often led by the fishers themselves.
“Nobody is trying to hide the fact that fishing has an impact,” Tom adds. But we also need to recognise what’s improving. After all, “some of the best ideas in fisheries come from fishers”.
Fishing is more than a source of food. It holds together many small coastal communities across the UK and Europe.
Now is the time to listen, collaborate, and work together toward a more sustainable future for fishing.
As Tom puts it: “We need to bring a little bit more balance to the story.”
